SINGAPORE - Customers can now choose from about 17,000 items on the iShopChangi platform, more than triple the number available before the coronavirus outbreak struck.
That is one of the ways Changi Airport Group (CAG) has moved to help retailers at the airport reach out to non-travellers in Singapore, as international travel remains at a standstill amid the pandemic.
CAG said online sales by Changi Airport retailers have surpassed pre-pandemic numbers, though it did not provide specific figures.
Said CAG spokesman Ivan Tan: "Currently, more than 90 per cent of our customers are non-travellers... Wines and spirits, beauty and electronics continue to be most popular with our customers."
The pivot to online sales comes with barely any travellers passing though the airport. Passenger traffic remains at less than 5 per cent of what it was before the pandemic, and retail sales at Changi Airport have plunged 74 per cent this year.
At Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, which have remained open, only about half of the outlets in the transit areas are operating. Operations at T4 have been suspended, while T2 remains closed after plans for upgrading works were brought forward.
Mr Tan said work has been done to transform Changi's food and beverage business through the launch of the Changi Eats food delivery service in June.
There are now 40 brands offering over 800 food, drink and snack items on the platform.
He said the number of orders received had grown almost fivefold since its launch, proving it was "plugging a market gap and demonstrating how we are value-adding to our customers".
Most recently, it launched shopping tours of its transit areas, held on weekends and by invitation only. They are targeted at customers who would otherwise have been travelling and shopping at Changi during the year-end holiday period.
Mr Tan said: "These shopping tours allow us to continue to engage our customers and share our deep knowledge of travel retail products with them."
WASHINGTON: The Trump administration is poised to add China's top chipmaker SMIC and national offshore oil and gas producer CNOOC to a blacklist of alleged Chinese military companies, according to a document and sources, curbing their access to US investors and escalating tensions with Beijing weeks before President-elect Joe Biden takes office.
Reuters reported earlier this month that the Department of Defense was planning to designate four more Chinese companies as owned or controlled by the Chinese military, bringing the number of Chinese companies affected to 35.
It was not immediately clear when the new tranche would be published in the Federal Register. But the list comprises China Construction Technology and China International Engineering Consulting Corp, in addition to Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) and China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), according to the document and three sources.
The Defense Department did not respond to a request for comment.
The move, coupled with similar policies, is seen as seeking to cement outgoing Republican President Donald Trump's tough-on-China legacy and to box incoming Democrat Biden into hardline positions on Beijing amid bipartisan anti-China sentiment in Congress.
The list is also part of a broader effort by Washington to target what it sees as Beijing's efforts to enlist corporations to harness emerging civilian technologies for military purposes.
Reuters reported last week that the Trump administration is close to declaring that 89 Chinese aerospace and other companies have military ties, restricting them from buying a range of US goods and technology.
SMIC was already in Washington's crosshairs. In September, the US Commerce Department imposed restrictions on exports to the company after concluding there was an "unacceptable risk" that equipment supplied to it could be used for military purposes.
The list of "Communist Chinese Military Companies" was mandated by a 1999 law requiring the Pentagon to compile a catalogue of companies "owned or controlled" by the People's Liberation Army, but the Defense Department only complied in 2020. Giants like Hikvision, China Telecom and China Mobile were added earlier this year.
This month, the White House published an executive order, first reported by Reuters, that sought to give teeth to the list by prohibiting US investors from buying securities of the blacklisted companies from November 2021.
The directive is unlikely to deal the firms a serious blow, experts said, due to its limited scope, uncertainty about the stance of the Biden administration and already-scant holdings by US funds.
Still, combined with other measures, it deepens a rift between Washington and Beijing, already at loggerheads over the coronavirus and China's crackdown on Hong Kong.
Congress and the administration have sought increasingly to curb the US market access of Chinese companies that do not comply with rules faced by American rivals, even if that means antagonising Wall Street.

30일 통계청이 발표한 ‘10월 산업활동동향’에 따르면, 지난달 전산업 생산은 전월 대비 0%, 전년 대비 2.7% 감소했다. 전월 대비 서비스업에서 증가했지만, 광공업과 건설업 생산이 줄면서 증가분을 상쇄했다. 전년 동월 대비로는 광공업 서비스업 건설업 등에서 생산이 줄었다.
광공업생산은 화학제품에서 3.5% 증가했지만, 반도체(-9.5%), 전자부품(-2.6%) 등이 줄어 전월 대비 1.2% 감소했다. 반도체의 경우 D램 등 메모리반도체가 최근 증가한 기저 효과의 영향으로 감소했다. 통계청 관계자는 "화웨이 관련 문제로 지난 달 선구매가 있었고, 이번달에는 그 기저 효과로 수출 많이 줄었다"고 설명했다.
제조업 재고는 전월 대비로 0.9% 줄었고, 전년 동월 대비로는 0.1% 감소했다. 제조업 평균 가동률은 전월 대비 0.2%P(포인트) 하락한 73.7%를 기록했다.
소비 동향을 보여주는 소매판매는 전월 대비 0.9% 감소했다. 의복 등 준내구재가 7.2%, 승용차 등 내구재가 2% 늘었지만 음식료품 등 비내구재 판매는 5.7% 줄었다. 사회적 거리두기 완화와 외식 증가에 따라 음식료품 수요가 감소한 영향이다. 전년 동월 대비로는 가전제품 등 내구재는 늘었으나, 음식료품 등 비내구재와 신발과 가방 등 준내구재 판매가 줄어 0.2% 감소했다.
설비투자는 항공기 등 운송장비 투자가 14.9% 줄어 전월 대비 3.3% 감소했다. 일반 산업용 기계 등 기계류 투자는 1.9% 늘었지만, 항공기 투자가 큰 폭으로 줄어 이를 상쇄하지는 못했다. 관세청에 따르면 항공기 수입은 지난 9월 하루 평균 2만6600달러였는데, 10월에는 900만달러로 그 규모가 확 줄었다. 전년 동월 대비로도 항공기 등 운송 장비 투자가 10.3% 감소하면서 설비투자는 1% 감소했다.
건설 기성은 토목(6.7%)은 증가했지만, 건축 공사 실적이 2.8% 줄면서 전월 대비 0.1% 감소했다. 주거용 및 비주거용 건축 공사 실적이 감소한 영향이다. 건설 수주는 주택, 공장, 창고 등 건축이 -14.9%, 토목이 -26.3%을 기록하며 전년 동월 대비 17.3% 감소했다.
전반적인 경기흐름을 보여주는 경기동행지수와 선행지수 순환변동치는 둘다 전월 대비 상승했다. 현재 경기 상황을 보여주는 동행지수 순환변동치는 건설기성액이 감소하였으나, 수입액, 내수출하지수 등이 증가하여 전월대비 0.5P 상승했다. 향후 경기를 전망하는 선행지수 순환변동치는 건설수주액이 감소했지만 경제심리지수, 코스피 증가 영향으로 전월대비 0.4P 올랐다.

이번 주 국내 첫 물류 리츠와 명신산업 등 6개의 공모주(스팩 제외) 청약이 예정돼 있다. 수요예측에서 역대 코스피 상장사 중 최고 경쟁률을 기록한 명신산업이 또 한 번의 개인 투자자의 청약 광풍을 몰고 올 수 있을지 관심이 모아진다.
29일 금융투자업계에 따르면 기관 대상 수요예측에서 1,196대 1을 기록한 자동차 부품 기업 명신산업이 유가증권시장 상장을 위해 오는 30일까지 일반 투자자를 대상으로 공모주 청약을 진행한다. 명신산업은 수요예측에 참여한 기관 100%가 공모가 밴드 이상을 제시한 것을 감안해 공모가를 밴드 최상단(5,800원)을 10% 이상 웃도는 6,500원으로 결정했다. 명신산업의 공모 총액은 1,022억원으로 주관사는 미래에셋대우와 현대차증권이다.
국내 첫 물류센터 공모 상장 리츠인 이에스알켄달스퀘어리츠도 연내 코스피 시장 입성을 위해 내달 4일부터 8일까지 청약을 받는다. 오피스 등 상업용 부동산에 투자하는 것이 아닌 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)로 인한 물류 수요 확대 수혜가 기대되는 물류센터를 기초 자산으로 삼는 것이 투자 포인트이며 쿠팡, GS리테일, CJ대한통운 등을 임차인으로 두고 있다. 공모가는 5,000원(모집총액 3,573억원)이며 한국투자증권이 상장을 주관한다.
12월 첫째주 코스닥 상장을 추진하는 바이오 업체의 청약도 줄줄이 예정돼 있다. 최근 퀀타매트릭스와 엔젠바이오는 공모가로 각각 2만5,500원(모집총액 435억원), 1만4,000원(모집총액 342억원)을 확정했다. 퀀타매트릭스는 서울대 공대의 BiNEL 연구소에서 분리 설립된 업체로 미생물 진단 기술을 기반으로 하는 체외진단 전문 기업이다. 엔젠바이오는 유전체를 조각 내 염기서열을 데이터로 변환하는 ‘차세대 염기서열 분석(NGS)’ 기술을 보유한 정밀 진단 플랫폼 회사다.
인쇄회로기판(PCB) 전문 제조기업 티엘비는 오는 30일부터 1일까지 수요예측을 거쳐 내달 3~4일 청약을 받는다. 티엘비의 공모가 밴드는 3만3,200~3만8,000원(모집총액 332억~380억원) 주관사는 DB금융투자다.

It’s described as an “employment ice age” in Japan and “Hell Joseon” in South Korea.
The Covid-19 pandemic has triggered a rise in unemployment in both countries with young people, perhaps, bearing the brunt of the job losses. Many are unable to secure their dream jobs – or any job at all – after graduation.
As major conglomerates in both countries cancel their annual mass hiring blitz, Japanese and South Korean youth have had to think on their feet to escape the prospect of being jobless as Correspondents Walter Sim and Chang May Choon report.

After applying to nearly 50 firms in Japan and overseas, Ms Ayaka Nakamura finally got a job offer as an associate at a Tokyo research firm.
This was despite her aspirations to work in journalism, either at a newspaper or online media firm.
"Honestly I was very angry when I was rejected the first time, but after facing dozens of rejections I got used to the feeling," the 23-year-old told The Straits Times.

Landing a job, not to mention a dream job, is nowadays a mean feat for young people in South Korea.
Already stuck in a fiercely competitive job market saturated with college graduates, one they had been regarding as "hell" for a while, they now see their prospects darkening further due to Covid-19 and changed recruitment practices.
South Korea reported a record-high actual unemployment rate of 25.4 per cent in September for those aged between 15 and 29, a 4.3 per cent increase year-on-year. This figure includes those holding part-time or temporary jobs, who are working fewer than 36 hours a week while trying to find a permanent job.

Living in New York and about to complete her post-graduate studies in political science earlier this year, Ms Lee Hyun-a was ready to find a job in the big apple and start the new chapter of her life there.
Then the Covid-19 pandemic reached the United States and the 25-year-old had to return to her hometown in South Korea in May.
"Both daily life and the job market froze at the same time. I couldn't stay on and pay rent without a job anymore, so I came back," she told The Straits Times.

포스코, 고려제강 등 우리 철강업계 주도로 협력 개발한 세계 최고강도 PC 강선의 규격이 국제표준에 등재됐다.
산업통상자원부 국가기술표준원은 한국철강협회가 국제표준화기구(ISO)에 제안한 '세계 최고강도급 PC 강선' 규격이 4년여의 노력 끝에 ISO 국제표준에 반영, 등록됐다고 29일 밝혔다.
PC 강선(Prestressed Concrete Steel Wire)은 대형 교량 등 구조물에 사용되는 선 형태의 철강재다. 중심체 방향으로 끌어당기는 힘을 유지해 건축물의 안전성을 확보하는 역할을 한다.
세계 최고 강도 PC 강선은 물체가 잡아당기는 힘에 견딜 수 있는 최대한의 응력(인장강도)이 2천360MPa(메가파스칼)급으로, 기존 최고 등급인 1천860MPa보다 25% 이상 강도가 상향됐다. 2천360MPa는 1㎠의 면적당 최대 23t(중형차 15대)의 무게를 견딜 수 있는 강도를 뜻한다.
포스코의 고순도 강재 생산기술과 선재 전문기업 고려제강의 강선 제조기술이 만나 만들어낸 성과다.
이번 국제표준 등재 프로젝트는 2016년부터 추진돼 올해 10월 ISO 최종 투표를 통과했다. 이달 말 2천360MPa 및 2천160MPa급이 최상위 강도 등급으로 추가 반영돼 개정 등록된다.
이에 따라 앞으로 교량이나 돔, 발전소, 대형 건물 등 최고 강도 PC 강선이 필요한 다양한 국내외 건설시장에서 수출 판로가 확대될 것으로 보인다.
이승우 국표원장은 "국제표준 등재는 소재부품장비 산업의 경쟁력 강화를 위해 정부와 협회, 소재 기업, 가공기업이 연대와 상생협력을 통해 이뤄낸 값진 결실"이라고 평가했다.
SINGAPORE - Defying the risk of firms having to wind up in the shadow of the pandemic, more business entities were set up in Singapore in the past five months than in the same period in 2019, particularly in the wholesale trade and retail sectors.
The Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority's (Acra) registry statistics show that the number of new businesses registered has been on an upward trend since the country entered Phase 2 of reopening its economy in June.
