When Murfy Powell of Johnstown was diagnosed with liver cancer in the midst of her divorce proceedings in 2018, the community gathered together en force to help her feel supported with cards, visits, phone calls and more. This Christmas, she is paying it forward.

“I realized that I’m a fortunate person to have that support system, and many people don’t. And so that’s why this is happening,” Powell said.

The baker and owner of The Pie Tin was inspired by this generosity to give back to those in the Northern Colorado community and put out a note on the NextDoor app to see if a few of her neighbors might be in need of a small Christmas gift. Little did she know, more than 100 people would reach out with nominees and offers to help with baking and delivery.

LOVELAND, CO – DECEMBER 23, 2019: Murfy Powell, owner of The Pie Tin, makes cinnamon rolls Monday, Dec. 23, 2019, in her Johnstown kitchen. The Pie Tin and Lift Coffee Bar in Johnstown partnered up for Rolled and Mugged, where volunteers will deliver cinnamon rolls and coffee on Christmas morning to those who have had a rough year or holiday season. Nominated individuals are “mugged and rolled” — given a mug of coffee and a cinnamon roll, that is.

“I thought maybe you know, 20 or 30 people would say, ‘Yeah, I know someone’ and within hours my box was full of people that said, ‘I know of someone,’ ‘I want to help,’ ‘I think this is a great idea, what can I do to help?'” Powell said. “It’s really been a community effort. It’s not something that I could undertake all by myself, given the volume that it’s gotten to be.”

Twelve teams of volunteers will be gathering at the Johnstown Lunch Box on Christmas morning to collect the packages which include a cup of coffee courtesy of Lift Coffee Bar, a handmade cinnamon roll and a card signed by all the volunteers. They will then deliver across Northern Colorado, everywhere from Frederick to Wellington and Berthoud to Evans.

“It’s been overwhelming, the people that have volunteered and kind of had a blind trust in this brand new adventure really. It’s also overwhelming, the amount of people that are my neighbors and that live in our community that are hurting and having struggles and having a hard time,” Powell said. She plans to continue this program in the coming years if it is well received and the community benefits from it.

Powell put out the invitation for nominees six weeks ago and has been making preparations ever since. While she acknowledges that her gift might not solve any of the day-to-day problems and pains these individuals are facing, she hopes the measure of kindness can help make them feel loved this holiday season.

“Whenever we leave them, they’re still going to have bills to pay, they still have children that they need to feed, they still have an empty chair at their table of someone they’ve lost. They still have to go to the doctor and get testing done and work through terminal and critical illnesses,” Powell said. “I’m hoping that, for a moment, they can take break and realize that somebody cares about them, and they’re loved.”
